Welcome! This website is dedicated to preserving the history and legacy of the former asylum located in New Toronto, at the intersection of Lake Shore Boulevard West and Kipling Avenue.
Originally opened as the Mimico Asylum, this institution underwent several name changes over the years, eventually becoming known as the Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital before closing its doors in 1979. For decades, it played a significant role in Ontario’s mental health care system, and its story is deeply woven into the fabric of the local community.
Today, the grounds have taken on a new life, blending the past with the present:
-
🏫 The Cottages and Administration Building now serve as part of Humber College’s Lakeshore Campus, supporting a new generation of students.
-
🎠The Assembly Hall, once a gathering place for hospital staff and patients, is now operated by the City of Toronto’s Cultural Department and available for community events and performances.
-
🏠The Superintendent’s House has been transformed into Cumberland House, a part of the Jane Tweed Centre.
-
🚪 The Gatehouse, formerly the hospital’s gatekeeper’s residence, is now home to The Gatehouse, a non-profit organization supporting survivors of childhood sexual abuse.
Through photos, stories, and historical information, this site aims to honour the site’s complex past, share its transformation, and ensure that the legacy of the Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital is never forgotten.
